Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, nestles in a ring of mountains round the mouth of the fast-flowing River Ness as it flows into the Inverness Firth. The city's history stretches back before the written word. Inverness has a great deal to offer, for it is an attractive city with facilities for the visitor second to none. A thriving shopping centre, you can walk within minutes to scenes of rural peace and splendour. Good eating houses and bars abound, and while the city goes about its considerable business, locals quickly display the hospitality and helpfulness for which the Highlands are noted.
Walking, cycling and pony trekking are among the most relaxing ways to explore the area. You can stroll along a meandering riverside path, amble to a forest waterfall or stride out through the wilds of Glen Affric. The Great Glen Cycle Route provides woodland trails for cyclists and walkers. And ancient drovers' trails provide rewarding routes for the pony trekker. You'll find riding schools for all ages, so bring along the children.
The Loch Ness Marathon will be run this year on Sunday 3rd October 2010. Starting at Fort Augustus and meandering thru the hills of the southern side of the loch and then finishing up at Queens park in Inverness.

The 'Caledonian Canal', which was designed by a famous 'Scottish' engineer, 'Thomas Telford', took 19 years to build, finally opened in October 1822. It has a total length of 60 miles, 22 miles of which is by man-made canal cuttings. The remainder of the canal is made up of a number of natural lochs, the best known being 'Loch Ness'. Loch Ness attracts millions of visitors eager to catch a glimpse of Nessie, the world's most elusive monster !
Being a major tourist destination, the area abounds with historic sites, castles, battlefields, heritage centres, museums, galleries, crafts, shops galore, restaurants, pubs and whisky distilleries.
Cromwell's Clock Tower - All that remains of the Citadel built in the 1650s by Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth Army. Cawdor Castle - Shakespeare wrote Macbeth with this castle as the setting. Culloden Battlefield - In 1746 Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite clans met to do battle with the English. (we let them win) Dunbar's Hospital - Built in 1688 as an almshouse. Abertarff House - A 16th century building with a turnpike stair, now the National Trust for Scotland's Highland office. IInverness Castle - Built 1834-46 and now used as a courthouse. The Town House - Late 19th century gothic building of considerable interest - see the crystal chandeliers. Museum and Gallery - Not to be missed if you are interested in the history of the city and the highlands as a whole. St Andrews Cathedral - Built in 1869, the baptismal font is a copy of the one in Copenhagen Cathedral.
