Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, nestles in a ring of mountains round the mouth of the fast-flowing River Ness as it flows into the Inverness Firth. The 'Caledonian Canal', which was designed by a famous 'Scottish' engineer, 'Thomas Telford', took 19 years to build, finally opened in October 1822. It has a total length of 60 miles, 22 miles of which is by man-made canal cuttings. The remainder of the canal is made up of a number of natural lochs, the best known being 'Loch Ness'.
